We arrived in Miami on a weekend and decided to really play tourist and spent Sunday at the ocean on the infamous South Beach. People watching definitely entertained us in between dips in the beautiful 80 degree blue waters of the Atlantic. We really enjoyed Miami, except for the driving. The roads reminded us of the crowded Bay Area traffic and the parking lot of Hwy 4.
We rode the Harley down to Key West for a couple of days over Halloween and decided to get into the spirit of things and wore cool masquerade masks. We really enjoyed our stay at the Westin located right on Mallory Square. We saw some beautiful sunsets and were within easy walking distance from Duval Street, where everything fun is happening. We also took a boat ride to a nearby island for lunch. We were pleasantly surprised to see our favorite entertainer Dominique, “The Cat Man” at the square.
On our way back to Miami, we stopped at Marathon (one of 200 islands along the Keys) to take a tour of the Turtle Hospital, the only one of its kind. We were surprised to learn that there are just 7 different species of sea turtles in the world, and 6 of them exist in the waters surrounding the Keys. Most of the turtles that end up there have been injured by boats, caught in nets, diseased or by ingesting debris from us humans. Right now, there are 5 permanent resident turtles that are too disabled to ever return to the oceans. They are being well taken care of and are educational ambassadors for the turtle world.
