The time has come for us to hit the road again. Our stay in the Fort Lauderdale area has been absolutely wonderful. We have made so many new life long friends at Aztec RV Resort in Margate Fl. We love it so much here, we plan to travel for the next five months and snowbird again back in Southern Florida. Our original plan was to stay here for one winter (temperatures in the freezing 70’s & 80’s… burrrrr). Things changed however when we found out that our 12 year old cat, Harley was diagnosed with cancer (large lymph nodes) near the stomach. The thought of traveling and dealing with Harley’s issues did not seem possible, so we decided to stay put for a while. We got to experience summer in Florida. High temps were in the 90’s and lows were in the 80’s. And the humidity was crazy. If you were not in air conditioning or in the swimming pool, sweat was dripping off the body constantly. Regardless, life here has been awesome!
By the way, Harley is doing great, she gained back her weight and then some. While on the road, we will need to get her blood monitored and continue to give her her meds. She is a great travel cat, kicking back on the bed most of the time!
Our site at Aztec RV Resort has a huge tiki hut, with full BBQ kitchen and outdoor shower. Attached is an unfinished building in which we added a sofa bed and portable air conditioner. This worked out perfectly for family that visited us over the last year and a half.
We have definitely determined that an RV is: “party for six, dinner for four, sleeps two…”.
Throughout our stay, we have met so many wonderful people from all over the USA and Canada. A big majority of the population here during the winter months are French Canadians from Quebec and Ontario. During the summer, the Americans that live here full time, had some really fun parties at the pool, clubhouse and BBQs under the clubhouse tiki. We celebrated holidays and birthdays with our friends. We also have a variety of animals that live in the park including 2 cockateil cages, an African Grey that lives in the accountants office, turtles, geese, ducks, armadillos, iguanas and tons of lizards that live in the tiki huts.
We have discovered here in Florida, that so many RV’ers were either boaters first or both. Being on the road or on the water has its similarities. We were lucky enough to have the opportunity to spend some time on the water. Our friends Dave and Lanne, invited us on a trip down to the Florida Keys on their remodeled (Dave did it himself) 1998 68′ Hatteras motor yacht. Along the way, we got to see many dolphins riding our wake. We had such a fun time enjoying life as a boater. We also got to enjoy times on the water with some other friends (Dustin & Sebastian) cruising the intercostal waterways here in Fort Lauderdale. It is unbelievable how much money there is here with all the mansions and super yachts to gawk at.
Fort Lauderdale is the ocean cruise capital of the world. After living here for a year, we figured this would be the perfect opportunity to do just that… cruise. For Sue’s sister Sandy’s 70th birthday, we booked a cruise on Holland America and toured the Eastern Caribbean… the islands of Turks & Caicos, Puerto Rico and St. Thomas. We had a fantastic time on all of our excursions and definitely ate some delicious meals. Sallie’s mom came to visit and they went on a weekend getaway cruise to the Bahamas. They had a great time together. We also had some trips to Key West and Destin, Fl where we love to park our RV on the beach at Camp Gulf. There are really great restaurants in our area and South Beach, Miami.
We have met some of the kindest people here and have truly enjoyed all of our get togethers. From dinner’s out, parties, to trips to the West Coast (of Florida, not California…).
Over the last year, we attended many concerts at some awesome venue’s nearby.
On our way back from a vacation to Destin in the Florida Panhandle, we stopped in Gainesville to tour an elephant and animal rescue called Two Tails.
On the road again…
Our next blog will be the start of our 5 month trip to the upper East Coast and the Maritime Provinces in Canada.
Have a wonderful time. Looking forward to reading about your adventures.
Hugs, Pat
