Our travels north to Jasper Alberta in the Canadian Rockies took us past Mount Robson, the tallest mountain in British Columbia. We arrived and had been dreaming of the baked spaghetti from the Jasper Pizza Restaurant and it didn’t disappoint 10 years later. We ate it twice in a week! We drove out to Patricia and Pyramid lakes in the rain and decided when the sun came out we would rent a rowboat and enjoy the water, sun and beach.
We first visited Maligne Canyon, so beautiful it took our breath away. We then took a long day drive on the Columbia Icefield to see the deep canyons and falls of the Athabasca and Sunwapta Falls. We also went to the Athabasca Glacier again to see how much it had receded, unfortunately we could actually see a difference in the 10 years since we had been there last. On this trip, we hiked the “toe of the glacier” being up close to the base of the moraine where the glacier water run-off was very loud and exciting.
The next day we went hiking at the “Valley of the 5 lakes” seeing moose, loons, and luckily no bears. There were indeed 5 different sized and colored lakes, from stagnant ponds, silt blue glacier lakes to crystal clear wide lakes. That night we needed a hot tub and a massage. We were in luck because the next day we went to the historic Miette Hot Springs and to our amazement saw a black bear just hanging out on the country road. The hot springs were so relaxing and peaceful, we were again surrounded by snow capped mountains and it even lightly snowed on us.
We drove out to Maligne Lake and took a hike to Moose Lake, but didn’t see any moose this day. That afternoon we had a nice lakeside walk and picnic lunch along Maligne Lake. On the way home we stopped at the Jasper Fairmont, Lake Edith and Annette and saw a squirrel nest vs pine marten drama up a tree. Unfortunately we think the pine marten won.
Throughout the week we were excited to see many different types of wildlife, from moose to big horn sheep to black and grizzly bears. The morning we were leaving, an elk and her baby visited us right outside the RV. We thoroughly enjoyed spending a week in Japser National Park.
Wonderful photos!!
Thanks! We are having a blast!
