Detour to Western Colorado… Gunnison, Ouray & Durango

We took a detour from “The Mighty 5” and spent some time in Colorado. High in the Western Rocky Mountains is a town called Gunnison, famous for the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. We took a National Park boat tour on the river where the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad took tourists back in the day. It was cool seeing the canyon walls from the river and from the canyon rim. We camped at Mesa RV Resort, a very nice park in Gunnison. We explored the town of Crested Butte where Sue reminisced about the time she spent there with her sister Sandy, at the Crested Butte Country Club, for a week of golf lessons.

Our next stop was the town of Ouray… “The Switzerland of America”, what a beautiful town this was. We enjoyed the public Hot Springs and also found a hidden gem… the Wiesbaden Cave. At 108 degrees, the cave was like entering a sauna, so soothing and definitely slowing ones heart rate. The mineral hot spring pool at 102 degrees sufficiently cooled us off after the cave. Haha. We also took the short walk to the Slot Box Canyon, where some people actually ice climb in the winter.

After driving over the “Million Dollar Highway” at a summit of 10,000 feet, we camped right on the river in Durango. We took the coal fired Durango Silverton train through the beautiful countryside. This train is a “must do”, if ever in the area.
