Before we got to Best Friends in Kanab Utah, we explored the Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park and were in awe of the massive sand dunes and overlooks.
It seems like this is becoming an annual volunteering experience. We stay at one of the two RV sites on the campus overlooking Angels Canyon and Creek surrounded by the Kanab red rocks. It is an amazing natural, peaceful place, except when we can hear the dogs barking at feeding time. On our first evening there we experienced a freak thunder and hail storm.
Our first morning we helped clean cat houses, wiping down cubby holes and perches for the cats to hang out on. We were so busy we didn’t get to take pictures. In the afternoon we went to Dogtown and walked some great dogs. The last dog that Sallie got to walk had been a staff only dog for his whole life, but now at 13 years old, he can be walked by volunteers. Sue’s last dog had only been at Dogtown for a couple of weeks, had a seizure history, and actually had a seizure with Sue half way through his walk. It was pretty traumatic for her, but with the aid of whistles and staff radios, it got the medical team out to tend to him immediately. We found out later that day and the next that he was fine and was started on medication.
The second day Sallie spent the morning at Piggy Paradise and with the goats. She helped prepare breakfast and feed the senior pigs and 15 piglets that were rescued from a breeder. Did anyone know that some pigs like their bellies rubbed? She found some special goat friends who loved to give kisses. At the front patio of the check-in desk there are a couple of hummingbird feeders that attract about 25 hummers. Did you know that hummingbirds are actually omnivores and need the sweet nectar for strength to go catch bugs for their food? We loved our time at the sanctuary and can’t wait to come back next year.
The hummingbirds remind me of my feeder in Guadalajara.
Norma… I don’t know how many times we have shared with others about the hummers outside your kitchen window. They were amazing!
