Savannah Georgia… such a beautiful city! All the huge oak trees and Spanish moss shading everything. This was our second visit and Ellie’s first. We stayed at the Red Gate RV Park and enjoyed horseback riding right on the premises where we rode around a Revolutionary War home foundation and Civil War encampment. Such history in and around Savannah. We could not visit Savannah without enjoying a meal at the Lady & Son’s Restaurant. No sign of Paula Dean though.
On our day trip to Tybee Island, Ga we visited Fort Pulaski.
We camped in Myrtle Beach where we were able to spend some down time just getting some beach in and shopping at the “junk shops”. We stayed at a campground about 20 yards from the beach.
We next landed at the Virginia Beach KOA, where Ellie’s uncle James lives. We had a great lunch and s’mores time with him and his wife Missy. Sallie and Sue went to the Virginia Beach “Boardwalk” and beach. It was so crowded, we turned right around and went back to the campground.
Our first day in the Washington DC area, we took Ellie to the Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD. It was a great morning at the Academy learning what it will take for her to get in. She was very excited to be on the grounds.
We then drove to the Arlington Cemetery where we experienced the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier Memorial. We also visited the JFK Memorial and the Women’s War Memorial.
We spent a day on the National Mall visiting the Vietnam Memorial, Lincoln Memorial & got to go up to the top of the Washington Monument.
We spent the morning of the Fourth of July in front of the Archives Museum watching the Parade. Then, unfortunately spent that night in the RV watching the Capitol fireworks on TV. We got rained out earlier in the day and decided not to stick around after being soaked to the bone.
We totally enjoyed taking the Metro everyday, going to the Mall, visiting The Smithsonian Castle, The American History, Natural History and Air and Space Museums. We had a nice visit from Kris and Ellie’s old roommate, Vince. He was a nice addition to the day.
We had to reluctantly send Ellie back home after a glorious month with her.
Sallie and Sue got to tour a couple of the US Capitol building rooms, get some pictures outside of the White House and Sallie got membership information at the DAR. Turns out, Sallie is related to the paternal side of Martha Washington, through her fathers side of the family. Washington D.C. turned out to be a very fun time for all of us!
What a wonderful trip! We have done most of it and loved every minute. Look forward to your blogs and great pictures.
We are leaving Tuesday for Truckee for a sisters reunion with Rhonda and Dana. My sisters and husbands live in NE, TX, and FL so it is always a treat for everyone to be together.
Happy travels!
Connie
